Effective October 18, 2026
Short version: You sign up with an email address so your progress can follow you. Your progress is private to your account. Your username, photo, country and typing stats appear on the public leaderboard unless you hide them. There are no ads, no tracking cookies, and your data is never sold.
Your account
Étude uses Google Firebase to run accounts. When you sign up:
- Firebase Authentication stores your email address and a password check (never the password itself), or, if you continue with Google, your Google account’s name, email address and profile picture link. Firebase sends the email that verifies your address and any password-reset emails you ask for.
- Cloud Firestore stores your player list and each player’s progress under your account: lessons passed, scores and levels, typing speed and accuracy, which keys and key combinations you miss, your history of sessions, and your settings. Only you can read or change it.
Google processes this information for us as a service provider. See Firebase’s privacy information.
What is public
- Usernames are reserved in a public list so no two players share one.
- The leaderboard shows, for each player who has finished at least five ranked sessions (timed drills and tests): username, profile photo (if you upload one), country (if you choose one), level, all-time WPM, accuracy and score, best WPM and score, number of sessions, practice time, best timed-drill scores, and the date you joined.
- Your stats page opens when someone clicks your name on the leaderboard. It shows the same charts and numbers as your own Stats page: speed, accuracy and score over time (with the dates and times of your sessions), how many days you practiced, accuracy for each key, finger and key-combination stats, and timed-drill bests. It doesn’t include your settings, your lessons or anything you typed.
- Turn off Show me on the leaderboard in Settings → Profile to remove your row and your stats page. Your username stays reserved.
- Your email address is never shown to other players.
What Étude stores on your device
To work offline and load quickly, Étude also keeps a copy of your players and progress in your browser’s local storage, plus a few device preferences such as the theme. Clearing your browser’s site data removes this copy. You can save your progress to a file yourself with Settings → Data → Export progress.
What Étude doesn’t do
- No advertising, and no selling or sharing of your data.
- No tracking cookies. Étude sets no cookies of its own; Firebase keeps you signed in using your browser’s storage.
- No recording of what you type outside the practice text. Only your accuracy and timing on the practice text are kept.
Sound, voice and fonts
The piano is generated in your browser. The optional read-aloud feature uses your device’s built-in voices, so the text stays on your device. Fonts are served from this site, not from a third party.
Children
You must be 13 or older to create an account.
Deleting your data
- Your whole account: Settings → Profile → Delete account. This removes your sign-in, your usernames, your leaderboard rows and stats pages, and your saved progress online. The copy on this device stays until you clear the site’s data.
- One player: Settings → Profile → Delete. This also frees that player’s username and removes their leaderboard row and stats page.
- One player’s progress: Settings → Data → Reset progress.
- Or email us at the address below and we will delete it for you.
